The Basics...
Otogi is the only child of Otogi Sindin, owner of the Black Crown Game Store. Otogi's story in the anime differs somewhat from the manga, but in both he is the overconfident prodigy with a flashy new game to promote, and his primary purpose is to function as a tool of revenge.

In the manga, Otogi has been groomed by his father to avenge his humiliation at the hands of Mutou Sugoroku. Otogi creates a new game in order to defeat Sugoroku's grandson - the series hero, Mutou Yuugi. Through a convoluted plan - Otogi lures Yuugi into a duel with him, which quickly turns sinister when Otogi's father intervenes. Our young hero nearly dies as a result, and Otogi's focus on revenge is broken. His development from creepy devotee to a more sympathetic, human character continues throughout the series. While not a staple character, Otogi continues to make appearances from time to time.

In the anime, Otogi's story is far simpler. His appearance seems to be a sort of 'interlude' between one large story arc and another - Duelist Kingdom and Battle City. As with most of the other characters, Otogi's family is never mentioned. He's the owner of the Black Crown Game Store, which rivals the Kame Game Shop, owned by Mutou Yuugi's grandfather. He is also a great fan of Pegasus J. Crawford, and angered by his idol's loss at Duelist Kingdom, Otogi believes Yuugi to be a fraud.

Along the same lines as the manga story, Otogi vows to get revenge for the 'wrong' done to Pegasus, and intends to defeat Yuugi and prove his title as "The King of Games" is undeserved. Once again, gamer prodigy Otogi's new game comes into play as a vehicle for revenge. As he does in the manga, Otogi angers Yuugi into accepting his challenge by first humiliating Yuugi's best friend, Jounouchi Katsuya. After Yuugi's eventual victory, Otogi joins Yuugi's merry band of friends and while not a staple character, he does appear in several more arcs.

Most of the antagonists in the series have fully developed personalities and histories, but Otogi is one of only a handful of former enemies whom join forces with Yuugi for any length of time after being 'converted.' Or has he been converted? Even after dropping his goal to defeat Yuugi, Otogi teams up with the crew for his own reasons - generally because he's bored or 'happens to be in the area.' Much like Kipling's fictional cat, Otogi continues to be "He Who Walks By Himself." He does, however, feel some attachment to the group, especially to Jounouchi's younger sister Kawai Shizuka, much to Jounouchi and Honda's agitation.

Suave, dapper, witty and intelligent, Otogi proves to be a formidable foe in the romantic arena if not in the dueling ring. He has a pack of devoted fangirls, and it's a common fandom belief that the boy can seduce anyone he puts his mind to, male or female. In the series, however, Shizuka continues to be fairly oblivious to his advances. This doesn't seem to frustrate him as much as it does Shizuka's other would-be suitor, Honda Hiroto.

Otogi has a sarcastic sense of humor and is quick to tease when someone makes a mistake. He can be very pissy when things aren't going his way, but when it's crunch time he'll usually shoulder the load without complaint, just like everyone else.

Additional Information: Uses flicked dice as a weapon - lethal.

The Basics...
Details about Honda are sketchy at best. Part of your average nuclear family (sort of), dog-owner, motorcycle enthusiast. Apparently has a yen for Okonomiyaki, and hates tofu. He has an older sister, name unknown, who gifted him with a nephew, Johji. Baby Johji accompanies Honda in early parts of the manga and proves himself to be a holy terror and a young pervert with an obsession for Anzu's chest. Ah, children.

Honda can be better described through his relationships throughout the series. He joins the crew as the best friend of Jounouchi Katsuya, and later becomes a sort of rearguard for the little crew once Jounouchi joins up with Yuugi and Yuugi's childhood friend Mazaki Anzu. Honda's relationship with Yuugi has a rocky start - he and Jounouchi tease the smaller boy until Yuugi steps up to save them from being bullied by another, older student. Honda joins the group, but doesn't actually prove his own self-worth until much later. Throughout the series, he's perpetually coming to the rescue. He owns up to his own guilt when Yuugi and Jounouchi prepare to take the heat for him from a high school professor with a chip on her shoulder. Later, Honda sacrifices himself in order to get Yuugi out of one round of Kaiba Seto's lethal "Death-T" game. Be it carrying fallen members of the crew, throwing himself into the line of fire for a damsel in distress, or taking out the baddies like a beefy video game avatar, Honda's there fighting the good fight.

Whether or not his rescue attempts actually work is a different story altogether.

Honda's usually the conservative voice of reason and caution behind Jounouchi's grandstanding (and by no means the only one), but that doesn't mean he won't throw himself carelessly into danger just as easily as his best friend. He's more of a realist, which occasionally causes friction when he advises a friend not to take up a challenge and is accused of not having faith.

Manga Honda appears to have some anger-management issues. Early on in the series, he and Jounouchi both admit to not liking themselves before they met Yuugi, and Honda also explains how he used to "get so wound up" - because of self-hate or because of something else, we never find out - that he would lash out at anything to ease the tension. Despite his caution, when Honda feels strongly about something he still resorts to action (and often violence, either against himself or others) first to solve the problem.

He despises personal weakness and encourages his friends to be strong, but he also plays by his own code of ethics and doesn't beat up weaker opponents. Jounouchi upholds this code as well and Honda looks up to him for it.

Additional information: Dog's name in manga is Blankey. In the anime, Honda mentions wanting to be a pilot when he grows up.

The Basics...
Often in chess, the Knight proves to be the swing point of a game. Never moving directly forward, seemingly limited by the strange pattern it is allowed to follow, in chess the Knight is nevertheless capable of feats that other pieces could not hope to achieve. Such is Jounouchi's lot.

A schoolyard bully with a broken home, the proverbial boy from the wrong side of the tracks, Jounouchi found a purpose and a hero in Mutou Yuugi. Originally, Jounouchi's intention was to open Yuugi's eyes to the harshness of reality and teach him how to be a man by teasing him, but his feelings changed when this unlikely little boy took a beating to save Jounouchi and Honda from further punishment by an upperclassmen.

Following that, Jounouchi became Yuugi's right-hand man, and Yuugi paid him back by teaching him about friendship, and about how to play Duel Monsters. Fluffy, inn't it? Take it easy, I swear this isn't a Yuugi/Jou website!

Jounouchi's younger sister Shizuka is the central point that Jounouchi, Honda, and Otogi revolve around. When she's present, tensions run high - Jounouchi assumes that Honda and Otogi both want to get into his little sister's pants and reacts accordingly, Honda assumes that Otogi wants to get into Shizuka's pants and reacts accordingly while Otogi pretends to be above it all and Shizuka...either enjoys the trio fighting over her or is trying very hard to act like she doesn't know any of them.

When Shizuka is not present, however, the situation is very different. Honda and Otogi actually show signs of coming to an agreeable truce, even working well together in crisis with only minimal baring of teeth. Jounouchi, no longer panicked about the safety of his sibling's virtue, remembers that the other two actually are friends of his and not perverted pedophiles out to ravish Shizuka.
